Tablespoon definition

A tablespoon (abbreviated as "tbsp") is a US volume unit used in cooking, baking, herbal medicine, and more.

1 US tablespoon = 1/16 cup, 0.5 fluid ounces, or 15 milliliters.

1 Australian tablespoon (tbsp AU) = 20 milliliters.

Ounce definition

An ounce (abbreviated as oz) is a weight measurement widely used in the United Kingdom and the United States. The word ounce comes from the old Latin word "onza."

1 ounce = 1/16 avoirdupois pound.

US liquid ounce is a unit of volume used for measuring liquid ingredients.

1 fl oz = 1/128 US gallon, 1/32 US quart, 1/16 US pint, ⅛ US cup, 2 US tablespoons, or 6 US teaspoons.

How many oz in a tablespoon

Let's have a look at how many oz make a tablespoon.

1 tablespoon to fl oz (1 tablespoon to fl oz)

1 tablespoon = 0.5 fluid ounces (US customary system), or

1 tablespoon = 0.5 fl oz

1 imperial tablespoon = 0.625 imperial ounces (Imperial system), or

1 imp tablespoon = 0.625 imp oz

How to convert tablespoons to ounces

To convert US tablespoons to fluid ounces, multiply the number of tablespoons by 0.5, where 0.5 is a conversion factor:

the tablespoon x 0.5.

To convert imperial tablespoons to imperial ounces, multiply the number of tablespoons by 0.625, where 0.625 is a conversion factor:

the tablespoon x 0.625.

Let's have a look at an example. All the calculations below use the US measurement system.

How many ounces in 2 tablespoons

there is 1 fluid ounce in 2 tablespoons.

How to convert a tablespoon to a dry ounce

While tablespoons measure the volume, some ingredients, such as flour, sugar, and salt, measured in ounces as weight, could be measured in tablespoons.

To make an accurate conversion from tablespoons to ounce measurement, you need to know the density of the ingredient.

For example, the density of the cocoa powder (0.36 g/ml) is different from granulated sugar (0.85 g/ml) and all-purpose flour (0.53 g/ml). So the tablespoon value of each ingredient is different.

Here is a volume-to-weight conversion chart where tablespoon measurements are converted to weight ounces for different types of ingredients.

Note: the density of dry ingredients varies. For example, the density of brown sugar depends on its compaction.

So, the best way to ensure accurate measurements is to use a decent digital scale. Professional chefs recommend measuring dry ingredients by weight rather than volume.

Liquid and dry ingredients

Wet ingredients should be measured by volume using a wet measuring cup.

So if a recipe calls for a liquid in ounces, then you know that author meant a liquid measuring cup.

Dry ingredients listed in ounces should be measured by weight with a food scale (aka kitchen scale).

If a recipe calls for a dry ingredient in cups, it should be measured with a dry measuring cup. Small quantities of some dry ingredients could be measured with measuring spoons.

Should you invest in measuring cups for dry and liquid ingredients? The answer is yes, even if you think your kitchen is pretty well equipped. There's never been a better time to invest in measuring cups.

While liquid and dry measuring cups measure ingredients by volume, they are differently designed.

Dry measuring cups are created to level off dry ingredients. They have a flat top that is even with the cup's brim.

Liquid measuring cups usually have handles and consistently outsized spouts that make it easy to pour liquid ingredients.

These cups are made with plastic or glass to allow you to see the liquid measurement from a side-eye view.
